Cameron Mathison Says Vanessa Mathison Breakup Was “a Surprise”
Cameron Mathison is still making sense of his divorce.
The General Hospital star called his divorce from Vanessa Mathison after 22 years of marriage “a surprise” and alluded to several factors that made their breakup more difficult.
“It was a tricky time when we separated,” Cameron told Jennie Garth on the Sept. 9 episode of her I Choose podcast, “and there a lot of specific conditions that made it really tough.”
The 56-year-old added that he and Vanessa, 58—who share kids Lucas, 22, and daughter Leila, 19—are “still working through stuff” but explained that losing their family home to the Los Angeles wildfires back in January brought them back together in a new way.
“We had been separated for about a year and a half officially at that point—maybe a little bit longer,” Cameron explained, “but still felt very fresh. We have a lot of love for each other, but there was also a lot of pain at that time.”
“I really feel—I think I can speak for Vanessa as well, because we’ve talked about this—in that moment after the fire, I stayed in the kids’ room in her place,” he added. “It was as if going through that together just erased a lot of the negativity and just kind of shortened that timeline.”
In fact, the All My Children alum noted, being back under one roof forced him and Vanessa to find a “real place of love and care and support” for one another as they picked back up the pieces of their life and figured out their new family dynamic.
Phillip Faraone/Getty Images“We were there for each other and cried and talked and hugged,” Cameron shared. “Not in a, ‘Oh, we’re going to get back together kind of way.’ Just really close, nobody else knew what we were going through.”
E! News has reached out to Vanessa’s rep for comment and hasn’t heard back.
Cameron’s latest comments about his split reflect what he’s previously said about the unexpected development in his life.

At the time, just two months after losing his home, Cameron still recognized how much such a moment was able to bring them back together when he needed it most.
“In a way, this challenge and trauma brought us super close,” he explained. “It was a way to move on and be there for each other. She and I only really knew what each other were going through, so it was very valuable for both of us. I literally couldn’t have gone through this without her.”
