Grief and Gratitude

McCoy will be celebrating her 10th anniversary as Josslyn on GH this year. But what no one knew during her many years on the soap was that she was carrying a heavy load.

In 2021, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and in 2023, passed away after a two-and-a-half-year battle with illness.

McCoy took a leave from the show during the difficult time, temporarily replaced by Courtney Fulk. Now, the actress has taken to State of Mind to share her experience and what she’s learned about grief and life.

“Nobody would have ever known that I was dealing with something of that scale,” McCoy admitted. “It’s just an awareness to have because it just grounds you and reminds you to be open and kind to people.”

Benard noted that McCoy’s mother was everything to her, getting emotional as he thought about his own life, asking his co-star how she got through it.

“I remember it being really strange for a while; really numb,” the actress recalled. “I had a few big breakdowns, but day-to-day, I was so okay… I genuinely felt, I was so grateful. Like my life was gratitude.”

Josslyn’s portrayer revealed the best way she coped with her mother’s death: “I just went straight into community. My friends became my everything and people were coming to my house, like, doing shifts.”

McCoy also mentioned following happy impulses and doing anything fun she wanted to do, but shared the biggest thing she’s learned is, “there’s no solving or getting over anything. It’s just acceptance, and it’s going to hit you when it hits you. And I’ve had to learn to honor that feeling.”

The actress then circled back to the idea of gratitude and how that shaped her grieving process.

“Of course, when you feel like, ‘How can his happen to me? How does this happen to someone?’ the last thing in your nature that you want to do is go to gratitude,” McCoy acknowledged.

“But when your gratitude is real, for either what you had with somebody, or what you have in your life now, or what it taught you – and this my mom taught me, because as she was dying, this was all she did,” she said, receiving a “wow” from Benard. “I keep her gratitude journal, and now it’s mine. Like, I add into it.”
